Rosendale fossils and BX zoo

After a solid week of rain we decided to get out this weekend. Headed to Rosendale to hunt for Ordovician fossils and explore the main chamber of the Widow Jane nine. Found some nice specimens of trilobites, crinoids, brachiopods, and corals. The rain had washed the dust off the rock fall by the cave off the train trestle making it a bit easier to spot the fossils. We had our rock hammers and cold chisels to experiment with trying to separate the matrix from the fossils, which worked out pretty well. The mine was interesting, but slightly terrifying thinking that the sporadic columns of rock are all that was left to hold up the mountain above.

Sunday I took the kids to the BX zoo and took advantage of our membership to see all the special exhibits that we normally don’t have time to visit. All the critters cooperated and we saw tigers, mountain gorilla, and little penguins, which normally hide away when we’re there.
